The expertise and range of services offered at this comprehensive facility are unrivalled in the Washington, DC, area. Dedicated in the fall of 1998, the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center is a one-of-a-kind clinic designed to provide the most professional breast health care possible by coordinating services across specialties to maximize efficiency and produce optimal outcomes.

The Center is a collaborative venture of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University Hospital, and the Departments of Radiology and Surgery. As such it offers on-site integrated breast health services including:

Interdisciplinary breast professionals, working within steps of each other, offer seamless, confident, accurate and efficient management of breast care. In one visit, you may be seen by a doctor or a nurse practitioner who specializes exclusively in breast health, by a radiologist who dedicates her practice to interpreting only mammograms, or by a surgeon who exclusively practices breast surgery. You may have a consultation with a risk assessment group, led by one of the world's leading experts in breast cancer risk assessment.

"Top 5%" - Recently the FDA granted the Ourisman Center's mammography program a "no citation" rating, an achievement attained by less than 5% of programs.

The Facility

The Ourisman Center has been designed to make breast health care as easy and comfortable as possible. Efforts have been made to create a relaxing atmosphere that encourages collaboration between patients and care givers.

A Resource Room is accessible to patients, their family and friends. A computer with Internet access, library and video player are provided. This room is stocked with helpful information pamphlets, including complementary or alternative medicine options - to encourage patient involvement and exploration.

The Staff

The Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center offers the physical examination and imaging services of health care professionals who exclusively subspecialize in the breast. Devoted solely to breast health care, these doctors, nurses and technologists - working within steps of each other - afford seamless, confident, accurate medical management.

Dr. Shawna Willey is the Director of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center. A respected breast surgeon, Dr. Willey is a well-known leader in breast health in the Washington DC area. Before joining Lombardi, Dr. Willey directed the breast program at George Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Willey believes strongly in Georgetown's tradition of focusing on both excellent clinical care and research. She divides her time between treating women with breast cancer and conducting research to benefit women in the future. She is currently studying the expanded use of ductal lavage for patients with previous breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and radiation. Read more about Dr. Willey.

Breast evaluation and monitoring services are provided by the Center's co-Director, Dr. Robert Warren. Dr. Warren devotes his clinical time exclusively to breast physical examination and management and monitoring of any positive findings. Dr. Warren also offers patient education and training in breast self-examination. Dr. Costanza Cocilovo is a board-certifiedsurgeon, fellowship-trained in breast surgery. A graduate of Stanford University, she received her M.D. from the New York Medical College, completing her residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan. She subsequently pursued externships and fellowships at Beth Israel Hospital, NY Presbyterian Cornell Medical Center and Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Marie F. Pennanen is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Surgery of the Department of Surgery. A graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Pennanen completed her internship and residency at George Washington University Medical Center. Among her interests are research into breast cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and the aesthetic approach to breast biopsy and cancer surgery.

Minna Manalo is a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the Ourisman Breast Health Center. She received her BSN from University of Virginia in 1994, and MSN from the Institute of Health Professions at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999, with dual-certification as an Adult and Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner. She has previous experience in adult internal medicine at MGH in Boston, MA, where she grew an interest in women's health and breast cancer. Her current clinical practice involves management of patients who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer or other breast diseases, and promotion of screening techniques. In August 2003, she became a certified breast health specialist. Her current clinical practice involves management of patients who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer or other breast diseases, promotion of screening techniques, and patient education and community outreach.

Theresa Harrington is a Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner in the Ourisman Breast Health Center. She received her BSN from the University of Scranton. In 1994, she began her career in cancer nursing at Georgetown University Hospital. Prior to returning for her Masters degree she worked in various aspects of the oncology nursing field, including the hospital setting, homecare and office based practice. She obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing and Adult Nurse Practitioner degree from George Mason University in 2001. In July of 2002, she returned to Georgetown University Hospital to join the members of Ourisman Breast Health Center. Her focus is on woman at high risk for breast cancer development, breast cancer risk reduction strategies, breast health promotion and management of the breast cancer patient. She is also a certified oncology nurse and certified breast health specialist.
