Jeffrey Toretsky, MD, received a 5-year $2.5 million R01 from the NCI to conduct isolation and small molecule targeting of Ewing's Sarcoma stem cells. Vicente Notario, PhD, professor of radiation medicine, received a grant for $1.6 million over 5 years by the National Cancer Institute to study the targeting EWS/FLI1-dependent pathways for Ewing’s Sarcoma radiosensitization. Pedro Jose, MD, PhD, professor and chief of pediatrics, was awarded $1.9 million over a 5 year period by the National Institute of Heart Lung and Blood to study GRK4 and D3 receptor regulation of NHE3 and NCC expression. Mikell Paige, PhD, received a $115,000 grant from the US Army to study non-metallic homing probes as MRI contrast agents. Habtom Ressom, PhD, received a 3-year $449,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop computational methods for label-free quantification and comparison of peptides in serum using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Priscilla Furth, MD, received a $156,000 supplement to her R01 on progression and regression of mammary preneoplasia to support the work of post-doctoral fellow Edgar Diaz-Cruz, PhD. Habtom Ressom, PhD, received a 2-year R21 from the NCI to develop mass spectrometry data analysis techniques to identify biomarkers for early detection of liver cancer. The Capital Breast Care Center received an $800,000 grant from the Avon Foundation to support ongoing operations as well as a $250,000 grant for expansion from the DC Government. Robert Clarke, PhD, DSc, received a $460,000 Department of Defense Idea Award to study unfolded protein response and endocrine responsiveness. Doctoral students Joseph LaConti, Priya Prahalad, and Geoffry Storchan eachreceived $97,000 fellowship grants from the Department of Defense. Amanda Graham, PhD, received a $373,000 R21 grant from the NCI to and evaluate an internet-based smoking cessation program among latino smokers. Kristi Graves, PhD, received a K07 award for $684,000 from the NCI to study behavioral science in personalized genetic medicine. Bassem Haddad, MD, received a $400,000 grant from the Avon Foundation to improve the diagnostic power of ductal lavage for early detection of breast cancer.
