Gift of Life Breakfast Raises Money, Hope, and Awareness
On Tuesday, October 7, 2008, the Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC) held its Second Annual Gift of Life Breakfast at the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel in Washington, DC. The program drew attention to the work of the area’s only community-based breast cancer screening facility and its success in addressing cancer disparities in the under-served populations of the national capital region. Newly Funded Grants
Carolyn Hurley, PhD, received a 5-year $7.5 million grant from the Office of Naval Research for research on human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing, used to identify compatible donors for bone marrow and cord blood transplants.
Lopa Mishra, MD, received a prestigious 5-year $7.5 million P01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to lead a team studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal cancer.
Marc Schwartz, PhD, received a 3-year $1.9 million R01 from the National Human Genome Research Institute to develop a web-based intervention to improve outcomes among women who receive uninformative BRCA1/2 test results.
Jeffrey Toretsky, MD, received a 5-year $2.5 million R01 from the NCI to conduct isolation and small molecule targeting of Ewing's Sarcoma stem cells.
