Join Lombardi in the Infinite Power of One Campaign

Dear Lombardi Faculty, Staff, Students, and Friends,

I wanted to send you a quick note to let you know about Lombardi’s participation in a national campaign. It is called The Infinite Power of One and it is proof that together, we are more powerful than cancer.

The campaign was launched by the Cancer Research Alliance, of which Lombardi is a member, along with 11 of the top cancer centers in the nation. These 12 centers, all NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers, aligned to empower all people to work together to change the face of cancer today. We believe that if we exercise our Infinite Power of One, we can accelerate cancer research and lessen the deadly impact of this disease.

The campaign is asking all Americans who can, to go online and donate $1. Imagine the impact of 300 million people each donating $1 toward the cure. Therein lies the Infinite Power of One.

I am proud that GUMC is taking a leading role in cancer research, and I am honored to lead Georgetown’s Lombardi Cancer Center. As you know, Lombardi is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Washington metropolitan area and because of this, we have a special set of opportunities and obligations to our neighbors. We must reach out and address issues such as health disparities and access to care here in our neighborhood.

Our outstanding physicians and nurses provide expert care and cutting-edge clinical research opportunities to thousands of patients each year. Our scientific efforts currently focus on six major programs, and are supported by a remarkable array of world class core facilities. New cross-cutting initiatives are planned in areas such as drug discovery and drug development, pediatric cancer research, tumor immunology, functional genomics, the establishment of an integrated clinical and molecular database of cancer, carcinogenic risk, and cancer control.

As you can see, we have a lot to offer, and there is much work to do. Lombardi is a founding member of the Cancer Research Alliance and, like all its members and all of us here at Lombardi, we are committed to ending the suffering caused by cancer. This is our commitment as an institution, but also as individuals.

The Infinite Power of One campaign will run from May 11 through June 15 – between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. I urge you to share news of this campaign with your loved ones, and help us make this time of year a time of hope for families everywhere.
